SOUTH SUBURBAN CHAPTER OF A.B.A.T.E

Let’ talk about seeing the light. I’m not just talking about revealing knowledge, but also actually have a brighter road in front of your bike after dark.

Let’s discuss headlights.

Besides installing a brighter bulb, you must also take into consideration the life of the bulb, which is rated in hours. Hour life of light bulbs is generallydetermined by turning the bulb on and never turning it off until it burns out.

When you turn the bulb on near the end of its life, the surge of electricity rushing to that bulb causes it to blow out. This is because the thin wire filament gets thinner as it ages. You mayhave experienced this in your home when you turn on a lamp and the bulb instantly blowsout.

I will cover Sylvania brand halogen series 9007 rated life

All have a 12-month warranty.

BASIC – 500 HOURS

XTRAVASION -250 HOURS

SILVERSTAR – 150 HOURS

SILVERSTAR ULTRA – 200 HOURS

ZXE GOLD – 90 HOURS

Each of these below the BASIC bulb gives you a bright, whiter light that lets you see farther down the road. As you can see you give up bulb life for a whiter light. In contrast to the old standard sealed beam on my 1996 van the bulb life is rated 850 HOURS.

If you estimate how many hours you ride each year you may want to install a new bulb each year.

A good tactic is to run on high beam during the day as it is not as offensive to other drivers at that time. This will double the life of the bulb and if you burn out the high beam it may keep you from getting a piece of paper from the man by not exceeding the posted speed limit.

RIDE SAFE!
